Melasma
Melasma is a common skin disorder characterized by brown or grayish patches or spots that, for most people, resemble freckles. The condition is more common in women than men and typically affects facial areas including the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip, although it can also appear on the neck, back, and areas of the arms.
It’s important to know that melasma is not cancer, nor is it a sign of cancer but because many people dislike the appearance of their skin, they often seek melasma treatment.
Causes of melasma
Our skin consists of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutis. The outer layer, called the epidermis, contains cells called melanocytes, which store and produce melanin, a dark pigment. These cells respond to various factors like heat, light, UV radiation, and hormones by producing more melanin, resulting in dark spots, areas, or patches on the skin.
Melasma, also called hyperpigmentation, is more apparent in the summer and may lighten during winter. It can also change color over time, either darkening or lightening.
Melasma treatment
Because sun exposure worsens melasma, it’s essential to protect the skin at all times with a high-factor sun cream to stop the pigmentation from becoming prominent and to prevent future melasma.
